The current Fort was built around the middle of the sixteenth century, in the place where was probably situated a pre-existing medieval structure. The tower used to be the southernmost State of Presidi defensive outpost and it was right on the border with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Papal States. In later centuries, the fortification underwent some renovations, but they kept intact its original appearance.
