The ancient centre, perhaps of Etruscan origin, gained importance in the Middle Ages when it became a fortified village of the Republic of Pisa on the borders of that of Siena. With the Grand Duke Ferdinando II it was elevated to marquisate on December 8, 1639 in favour of the Florentine albizi who held it until 1776.
