The importance of this settlement, for a long time property of the Gherardesca counts, is to be related to the extraction and trade of metals. As a result, over the centuries, the settlement has undergone various transformations based on operational needs.
At the center of the castle stood a palatium, which went through various construction phases from the eleventh century up to the gradual abandonment (late thirteenth – early fourteenth century). The mighty foundations are still visible in this building.
The castle, since 2001, has been studied extensively by a group of archaeologists and experts. The results of these studies are available on the web, where documents and information can be found on other places in the “Val di Merse”. The archaeological site is near the village of Chiusdino.
